Non-Invasive and Real-Time Optical Hydration Monitoring

The Problem

The problem HydraDerm addresses is the lack of precise, convenient, and real-time monitoring of hydration levels in individuals. Dehydration can lead to various health issues, including decreased cognitive and physical performance, skin problems, and more severe medical conditions. Current methods of assessing hydration, such as visual inspections, skin turgor tests, and urine output monitoring, are often inaccurate, subjective, and not suitable for continuous use. HydraDerm resolves this by providing an accurate, non-invasive, and continuous way to monitor hydration levels, helping individuals maintain optimal hydration and improve their overall health, athletic performance, and skin appearance.

Our Solution

HydraDerm is an innovative wearable watch that measures hydration levels accurately and non-invasively using advanced near-infrared (NIR) technology. It detects water molecules in the skin and provides a real-time hydration score from 0 to 100.

Technology

HydraDerm uses specific NIR wavelengths sensitive to water absorption along with a calibration model and signal processing. A specialised photodiode captures the reflected light, which is processed to interpret hydration levels accurately.

Development

Developing HydraDerm required expertise in optical sensor design, hardware development, signal processing, data analysis, and wearable technology. Extensive research selected optimal wavelengths, and the device was built on a PCB with LEDs and a photodiode for maximum accuracy.

Validation

Ex vivo and in vivo studies involving 20 participants validated the device’s accuracy and reliability, with results published in peer-reviewed journals.

Applications

HydraDerm meets the need for precise, convenient hydration monitoring in the healthcare, cosmetics, and wellness sectors. It helps individuals maintain optimal hydration, improving health, athletic performance, and skin appearance. The device’s versatility supports integration into research, skincare, and clinical settings.

Design

Encased in a durable, 3D-printed housing with a flexible strap, HydraDerm is user-friendly for continuous daily wear.
